Bruce Pearson and the Opera

Les McCallum is currently working hard to organise another evening of Opera at the WERFA pavilion after the success of the last event, with many people asking for a return visit. For anyone who missed it, and for those who attended the event, here are some images from the night.

A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist…

Neighbourhood Watch July 2016

With the hotter weather arriving at last and the holiday season approaching, it’s all too easy to forget about essential security measures. If you’re out in the back garden and all the front windows and doors are open, it’s a clear invitation to a prospective intruder. When you go away on holiday, arrange for a trusted neighbour or someone to keep an eye on your home, clearing accumulated post and newspapers from your letter-box.

*************************************************

More vehicle crimes occurred in our Watch area during June – theft of or from vehicles, or vandal damage; almost always to cars in the road, rarely to those on forecourts and never to those in garages.

Woodlands Estate Pavements

Due to blanket silence from Hounslow Highways, despite continual requests for discussion regarding the planned tarmacing of The Woodlands Estate footways, a meeting was held on Thursday 26th May, via Councillor Tom Bruce, in the belief that residents could air their thoughts to Hounslow Highways’ Operations Director Martin Clack and discuss further how the Estates pavements could be better resurfaced.

Unfortunately the meeting was concluded before it started with Mr Clack repeatedly stating “Footways work will commence from next week”.

Resurfacing with tarmac has begun in Woodlands Road and will continue throughout the Estate in the foreseeable future despite a petition to the Mayor of 270 signatures and emails from numerous residents to MPs, Councillors and newspapers outlining their grievances and proposals for alternative solutions. Tarmac footways are coming your way.

Apologies that the meeting was Hounslow Highways way of outlining their footway agenda but thank you to all who supported the request to discuss the matter further; it highlighted what a lovely community WERFA has.

Children’s Film review

The Good Dinosaur Family Film screening on 30th May 2016

Our first family film event was very well attended with 64 people, many of whom were new to WERFA making it a great opportunity to introduce our fantastic venue to a wider local audience.

To give the children a real cinema experience, we sold individual tubs of ice-cream from Isleworth’s beloved South Street café, made fresh popcorn served in stripy paper bags, and gave each child a dinosaur sticker and a printed cinema ticket on entrance.

By investing in a large screen covering the entire back wall of the Pavilion, providing a great sound system and selling tickets from an authentic-looking ticket booth made by the talented Les McCallum, we gave the audience the full cinematic experience and received lots of wonderful comments.

One mum, Michelle Hirdle commented ‘We really enjoyed the movie. What a great idea – and it was nice not having too many people. The ice-cream was delicious and we’re looking forward to the next movie.’

The next family film event will take place on Sunday 21st August at 11am. (Great for entertaining the children during the school holidays – and on your doorstep!) Doors will be open from 10am for refreshments and there will be a chance to win the Bluray of the film following the screening. Film TBC so please check the website for updates.
