Helping the Isleworth Safer Neighbourhoods Team

The Isleworth Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be working with Community Speed Watch in the near future.

Community Speed Watch (CSW) is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.

If you would like to volunteer please send an email to the team at: Isleworth.snt@met.police.uk and they will provide further details.

Want to know more about community speed watch, check out the website: www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk

Telephone and e-mail “scams” are becoming widespread; here are 5 tips for avoiding becoming a victim.=

  1. Always remember that a phone call, text or e-mail may not be genuine, even though it seems to be – the con-merchants are good at that sort of thing.
  2. Never disclose any security details or personal information.
  3. Listen to and trust your instincts.
  4. Never be rushed or pressurised into making a decision.
  5. Stay in control; if you’re not happy about the situation, terminate.

Look out for our new “Dedicated Ward Officer” PC Navdeep Verma  –  easily spotted in his high-vis. yellow jacket (now standard issue for local police officers);  don’t hesitate to introduce yourselves to him, he wants to  get to know the Ward and its residents.

***********************************************

Please do let me know about any crimes that occur in our Watch area; so often the first I know about them is when the Police tell me at Ward Panel Meetings.  Patrick Hooper (Woodlands Area Watch Co-ordinator).

Neighbourhood Watch

Current Police message:  “Hounslow is suffering from a rise in burglaries.  We need your help.  Tell us about any suspicious-looking people lurking close to buildings or paying them particular attention; walking slowly looking at houses or fences, or standing outside a property leaving car engines running  –  especially with their faces covered  –  even if in doubt, call 999, you are not wasting our time.” Remember – a primary purpose of Neighbourhood Watch is to be the eyes and ears of the Police.

**********************************************

In our Watch area the ongoing prevalent criminal activity involves motor vehicles (damage or theft of or from) – 12 instances in November – December on the Woodlands Estate alone. Don’t make it easy for them!  Never leave valuable possessions in your vehicle, always lock it, garage it whenever possible.

Neighbourhood Watch

Mobile phone theft still goes on; just over the Borough boundary in Whitton a lady had her phone snatched from her pocket a few days ago.  Never leave your mobile phone (or any other items of value) visible to others.

*****************************************************

The latest “scam”:  a “parking penalty charge” demand.   It’s clearly bogus because it gives no details of the location, time or date of the alleged offence, nor the vehicle supposedly involved, and also has an obvious spelling error.  Delete without action.

*****************************************************

A useful maxim, noted from the rear wall of the “Nationwide” branch in Hounslow: Always trust your instincts  –  not the caller, texter or e-mailer.  If you don’t know they’re who they say they are, think  –  they may not be.

Fly tipping on the WERFA Estate

We have had a recent issue with fly tipping on the estate, with a large amount of rubbish dumped around the Pavilion car park.

If you see anyone fly tipping record as much detail as possible and report the activity immediately to the local council. All information is valuable to the council and will be treated confidentially.

If you can also take photos please do so.

Important details to record are:

  • The date and time that you saw the fly tippers in action or discovered the rubbish
  • The location of the incident – either the address or local landmarks
  • A description of the rubbish eg builders rubble
  • The amount of people you saw and if you recognised any of them
  • A description of the people you saw (eg sex, hair colour, height, distinguishing features)
  • What you actually saw the people do
  • If there was a vehicle involved, and if there was, there any distinguishing features or signs on the vehicle and what was the make, model, colour and registration number
  • Where you were when you saw the fly tipping. What kind of view did you have? How far away were you, and what were the weather and light conditions line?

The Environment Agency has the statutory responsibility to investigate fly tipping incidences on  larger scale  where the waste may pose a serious risk to the environment and where the activity is linked to organised crime.

Remember, do not approach any individuals and do not put yourself in any danger.

If you see anyone fly tipping please go online to Hounslow Highways (www.hounslowhighways.org) or call them on 020 8583 2000 to report it.

The latest scam is an authentic-looking e-mail (I actually received one) purporting to come from HMRC, asserting that a significant tax rebate is due and requiring certain actions in order to receive it.   Total nonsense of course.  Anyone receiving one should please report it to your usual tax office (or ask me for the requisite contact details).   Patrick Hooper.

Burglary in Woodlands Road on Thursday 13th October, using a screwdriver to force entry.  Take advantage of the free advice available from the Police crime prevention experts, to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.

*************************************************

Damage to motor vehicles and the theft of cars and cycles seem to be the prevailing criminal activities, still going on. Previous advice still applies.

Neighbourhood Watch

Thefts of bicycles and of motor vehicles continue; always securely lock your bike (even at home); garage your car if possible.

*************************************************

Latest scam : drones advertised on online shopping websites for below recommended retail prices, money to be paid by bank transfer.  You may guess   –  the drones don’t exist and the “seller” vanishes. “Too good to be true”, indeed.

All Watch members may attend the AGM of Hounslow Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association at Hounslow Civic Centre on Wednesday 12th October at 7.30 p.m.

Neighbourhood Watch July 2016

With the hotter weather arriving at last and the holiday season approaching, it’s all too easy to forget about essential security measures. If you’re out in the back garden and all the front windows and doors are open, it’s a clear invitation to a prospective intruder. When you go away on holiday, arrange for a trusted neighbour or someone to keep an eye on your home, clearing accumulated post and newspapers from your letter-box.

*************************************************

More vehicle crimes occurred in our Watch area during June – theft of or from vehicles, or vandal damage; almost always to cars in the road, rarely to those on forecourts and never to those in garages.

Neighbourhood Watch June 2016

Following Mo Aliyas’s transfer to Hounslow West Ward, we now have a new PCSO, named Vikki Kelly.

********************************************

“Criminal damage to motor vehicles” (often mindless vandalism) continues, notably along Riverside Walk. It’s a crime, so if you see it happening please call 999; if possible get a photograph of the perpetrator/s.

********************************************

Despite “everyone having one now”, mobile phone theft still happens; please try to avoid using yours or having it visible while out and about.

Neighbourhood Watch

Warning – warm weather ahead! You still need to remember to close and lock all windows and doors when you leave your house, including sheds and garages; if you’ve an intruder alarm, always activate it when you go out.
Vehicle number-plate theft is on the increase. Measures against this happening are: (1) fit tamper-resistant number-plates; (2) garage your vehicle whenever possible; and (3) park in secure and/or well-lit locations.
Fraudsters are sending bogus phone texts and e-mail messages claiming to be from Apple, typically alleging that your account requires up-dating and giving a link to follow. As always, never follow such links; never provide account details or personal information to people you don’t know. If you receive one of these “Apple” messages, please report it to reportphishing@apple.com
